DBT Diaries – Week 2

Week two of DBT and I couldn’t attend this week as I was in training for work. I did, however, collect the handouts the day after so I was up to date on everything that was going on.

*Please remember not all groups are run the same way and your experiences may be different to mine. There is no right or wrong as everyone is different, this is just meant as a little insight into the topic for those who are interested.

This week’s topic was mindfulness ‘how’ skills. Whilst I’m familiar with mindfulness this is an area I haven’t touched on very much but one that is very effective. It’s about considering things non-judgmentally, one-mindfully and effectively:

Non-judgmentally: notice thoughts and feelings without labeling as good or bad

One-mindfully: Do one thing at a time and focus only on what you are doing. Be present in the now

Effectively: Think about your goals in the current situation. What is the most effective way to achieve them?

We discussed various ideas for practicing these how skills and were given handouts to take away and complete as homework detailing when we used the skills and how mindful we were.

As I said at the beginning I wasn’t in class this week so I can’t comment on what other people have said. I, however, found reading through the handouts alone very helpful and was able to reflect and consider the information in my own time.

As the next week, there was no session due to a building move I completed my homework and tried to continue my mindfulness practice until we started back again in our new location. The location change is causing a bit of anxiety as it’s very much out of my way to get to therapy from now on but I’m trying to keep an open mind.

I’ll let you know how I get on next week – wish me luck.
